Lawrenceville Community Mourns Tragic Loss as Family Faces Gun Violence Heartbreak
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a Lawrenceville family is once again faced with the devastating impact of gun violence. Just eight months after sharing joyful moments with her son, 30-year-old Darryl Long, Davetta Harris now finds herself mourning his untimely death. According to 11Alive, Darryl was tragically shot outside his vehicle on December 8, a shocking incident that has left the community reeling.
Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots early that morning, and when they looked outside, they were met with a scene that no one should have to witness—Darryl lying lifeless next to his car on Cornell Boulevard SW. Those who knew him describe him as a loving person, always quick to express his affection and kindness. “He was my oldest son, and he never hesitated to tell people he loved them,” Davetta shared. “If he spoke to you ten times a day, you would hear ‘I love you’ ten times.”
Sadly, this isn’t the first time Davetta has endured such heartbreak. In 2020, she lost her 22-year-old son, Devonte Harris, to gun violence during an attempted robbery in Decatur. When asked how she copes with such unimaginable loss, Davetta candidly admitted, “I don’t even know. Sometimes it feels like I’m just moving through life without really knowing how to handle it.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta, along with Atlanta police, has taken to social media, urging the community for assistance in finding Darryl’s killer. A flyer has been circulated, offering a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that leads to an arrest. Community members with any tips are encouraged to reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously, as every piece of information could help bring justice for Darryl and his family.
As we reflect on these heartbreaking events, it’s essential to come together as a community to support one another and address the alarming rise in gun violence that impacts families like the Harrises.
